Press statement 19 September 2024: The Ethiopian Human Rights Defenders Center is deeply concerned about the increasing harassment, imprisonment, threats, and intimidation faced by human rights defenders, including journalists, in Ethiopia. Journalists Belay Manaye and Bekal Alamirew, who were repeatedly arrested and abused due to their journalistic work, informed our organization that they fled the country due to pressure, threats, and intimidation after being released from prison.
The escalating pressure on journalists, including arbitrary arrests, intimidation, threats and forced self-censorship, shows that they are forced to leave their jobs and some to flee the country. EHRDC is also aware that CSO members are forced to flee the country due to threats and various pressures. Our organization emphasizes that the escalating situation of forcing human rights defenders and journalists into exile under multiple pressures, including arrests, undermines the freedom of the press and civic space, and restricts the right to freedom of expression, diversity of opinion, and the community’s right to access information. EHRDC also believes that these pressures not only restrict critical commentary, and reports on human rights protection but also erode the foundations of freedom of expression recognized under Article 29 of the Constitution.
Therefore, we call on the government to end pressures on journalists and human rights defenders, end rights violations, and arbitrary actions, including arrests, by implementing appropriate measures. We urge the government to uphold press freedom, foster an environment for diverse ideas, and end violations of freedom of expression, ensuring compliance with constitutional and international human rights obligations.

የኢትዮጵያ ሰብአዊ መብቶች ተሟጋቾች ማዕከል በኢትዮጵያ የሰብአዊ መብቶች ተሟጋቾች፣ ጋዜጠኞችን ጨምሮ እየገጠማቸው ያለው ወከባ፣ እስር፣ እንግልት፣ ዛቻና ማስፈራሪያዎች እየጨመረ መምጣት በእጅጉ አሳስቦታል። በሙያቸው ምክንያት በተደጋጋሚ ለእስር እና እንግልት የተዳረጉት ጋዜጠኛ በላይ ማናዬ እና በቃል አላምረው ከእስር ከተለቀቁም በኋላ በደረሰባቸው ጫና፣ ዛቻና ማስፈራሪያ የተነሳ በያዝነው ሳምንት ከሃገር መሰደዳቸውን ለድርጅታችን አሳውቀዋል። የዘፈቀደ እስራት፣ ማስፈራራት፣ ዛቻ እና እራስን ሳንሱርን ለማድረግ የሚያስገድዱ ሁኔታዎችን ጨምሮ እየተባባሰ የመጣው በጋዜጠኞች ላይ ሚደርስ ጫና ገሚሶቹን ሥራቸውን ትተው እንዲቀመጡ ያደረገ ሲሆን ጥቂቶች ደግሞ ሀገሪቱን ለቀው እንዲወጡ እያስገደዳቸው መሆኑን ያሳያል። ይህም በነፃነት የመዘገብ አቅማቸውን የሚጎዳ እና የሰብአዊ መብቶች ጥሰቶችን ለማጋለጥ የሚያደርጉትን ጥረት የሚያፍን ነው። በተመሳሳይ ድርጅታችን የሲቪል ማህበረሰብ አባላት በሚደርስባቸው የተለያዩ ጫናዎች ከሀገር ለቀው እንዲሰደዱ መገደዳቸውን ይረዳል። ድርጅታችን የሰብአዊ መብት ተሟጋቾችንና ጋዜጠኞችን እስርን ጨምሮ በተለያዩ ጫናዎች ከሃገር እንድወጡ ማድረግ በሀገሪቱ ያለውን የፕሬስ ነፃነት ምህዳር የሚያጠብ፣ ሃሳብን በነፃነት የመግለጽ መብትን፣ የሃሳብ ብዝሃነትን እና የማህበረሰቡን መረጃ የማግኘት መብትን የሚገድብ መሆኑን በአፅንኦት መግለጽ ይወዳል።
ድርጅታችን ጋዜጠኞችን ጨምሮ በሰብአዊ መብቶች ተሟጋቾች ላይ እየደረሰ ያለው ጫና የሰሉ ትችቶችን፣ የተለዩ አመለካከቶችን እና በሰብአዊ መብቶች አያያዝ ዙሪያ የሚቀርቡ ዘገባዎች ከመገደብ ባለፈ በኢፌዲሪ ህገ መንግስት አንቀፅ 29 የተደነገገውን ሀሳብን በነጻነት የመግለጽ መሰረታዊ መብትን የሚሸረሽር ነው ብሎ ያምናል። በመሆኑም መንግስት በጋዜጠኞችና በመብት ተሟጋቾች ላይ የሚደርሱ ጫናዎች እንድሁም የመብት ጥሰቶች እንዲቆሙ እና በተለያዩ የመንግስት አካላት እስርን ጨምሮ የሚደርስባቸውን የዘፈቀደ ድርጊቶች ተገቢውን እርምጃ በመውሰድ እንዲያስቆም ጥሪያችንን እናቀርባለን፡፡ በተጨማሪም መንግስት የፕሬስ ነፃነትን እንዲያከብር፣ የሃሳብ ብዝሃነትን የሚፈቅድ ምህዳር እንዲኖር እና ሃሳብን በነፃነት የመግለጽ መብት በአግባቡ እንዲከበር በአገሪቱ ሕገ መንግስት እና አገሪቱ በፈረመቻቸው አለም አቀፍ ስምምነቶች የተጣሉበትን ግዴታዎች በአግባቡ እንዲወጣ እንጠይቃለን።
